Lambanog

By: Eulalie Alba 3

Based on my research, in the 1900's up to now, the locals have been producing lambanog a traditional product of San Juan province of Batangas.

They say that “lambanog” is a poor man’s drink who worked as a "magsasaka" that lived in some provinces. Not anymore, or rather, it could be everybody’s drink. I mean, for those who can handle its strength.

The lambanog making process is inexpensive. The process of making it starts with what was called the tree of life, the coconut tree. Daily, the people collect the nectars in the tube and it is being distilled to become lambanog. The process of making lambanog is not too hard yet it is simple.

Buying Lambanog is almost as interesting as the drink itself. It is a clear, with a indifferent taste, and a finish with a hint of sweetness. I honestly like pure Lambanog more than all the other locally. I appreciate it not only for its vigor, but also for being easy in your taste buds, and constant as a cocktail base.

So remember, eat a lot, but always save some space for the lambanog. You can never be sure how many glasses you’re going to drink. But, if you can’t handle it, drink moderately. And if you can handle it, as usual, drink moderately.
