Kapeng Barako

By: Eulalie Alba 2

Barako a tagalog word which means strong man and as usual kape means coffee. Because of its strong taste and definition, it got the name kapeng barako.

Kapeng barako turned out to be a common name for all coffee from Batangas. It’s a distinct and outlandish coffee fully-grown in Lipa and in other high places of Batangas.

According to my research, Batangas Brew is actually a Liberica coffee, which started in Liberia in West Africa. Since Lipa is located in a high altitude area, it is one factor to grow good quality coffee beans. And the good climate and soil, made it different in quality with other Liberia varieties.

Kapeng Barako is prepared simply pouring hot water unto the grounds and filtering the mixture. Barako can be used to make espresso drinks.

Right now, kapeng barako is still part of most Batangueno’s mornings. Even I myself can’t make a day without a cup of it. So, try this kapeng barako and say more cups of coffee, because this is also one of the best products in Batangas that is also a great “pasalubong” to your family, relatives or friends that really like coffee. And this kind of coffee in Batangas called “kapeng barako” is very different to other coffee because like Batangas this is a home of strong and brave people.
